Autentico, vermiglio sangue fu versato, purtroppo in grande quantità,
sul suolo d’Europa, come testimoniano autorevoli scrittori, quali E.
Hemingway, J. Dos Passos e come ammoniscono persistenti cimiteri e
The presence of The United States on the different fronts of the First
World War (France, Flanders, Italy) was not only a simple contribution
in materials and supplies or a help in propaganda campaigns.
A huge amount of true, vermilion blood was shed on the soil of Europe,
as reported by many important writers, such as E. Hemingway and
J. Dos Passos; cemeteries and white graves, where one never forgets to
leave a fl ower, still stand as a warning.
The close bond between this generous people and its Fatherland, Europe,
was afterwards strenghtened and made sacred by the great price
paid in closer times to set us free from oppression.
That is why, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the end of the
First World War, we think that remembering a Pilot Offi cer like Coleman
De Witt, who offered his life in our skies, loved and celebrated
by the painter G.B. Tiepolo, is not only a duty towards History and
its Protagonists, but also a loyal proof of esteem and brotherhood,
which the Town of Vittorio Veneto wants to seal, as an everlasting
exhortation to the value of peace.

COLEMAN DE WITT
di sottrarsi, atterrando, all’impari lotta, preferì accettarla, senza esitazione, trasfondendo
Lt. De Witt Coleman was the only US aviator to be awarded with the Gold
Medal, with the following motivation: “On the afternoon of 27 October 1918,
during a bombing action, as fi rst pilot on a Caproni aircraft, he was attacked by
fi ve enemy fi ghters. Instead of avoiding the unequal battle by landing, he chose
to face the struggle and, by his magnifi cent example of courage and determination,
he inspired his companions with renewed strength and energy. Two of
the enemy planes were shot down, thanks to the accurate aim of the encircled
aircraft which continued to fi ght, even when it broke out in flames until, trapped
and overcome by the powerful group of enemy planes, it fell and the entire crew
perished in the accomplishment of their daring action”.
