Fabrica: Drawing from Memory
Fra i suoi clienti: The Beta Band; Hysteric Glamour; Dazed & Confused; British Vogue; Vogue Nippon; LoDown; Loyal; Relax. Ben Sansbury è grafico e art director. Lizzie Finn, Ben Sansbury and James Jarvis at Fabrica “Drawing from Memory” Workshop upon invitation: 15-17 December 2004 Lecture open to all: Thursday 16 December at 6:00 p.m. Wanted Creativity Workshops and Lectures 2004 Wanted creativity 2004 closes with an important appointment : Lizzie Finn, Ben Sansbury and James Jarvis, three of the most well-known young creative graphic designers of the international scene will be at Fabrica from 15 to 17 December for a workshop entitled "Drawing from memory". Theme of the workshop are memories in relation to the world of communication. Do we really know what anything looks like? Or what the true nature of an object is? As artists and designers, how well do our memories of objects, events or places serve us? How much do we rely on the viewer’s memories in order to communicate our ideas? The workshop will consist of drawing exercises which test how much we really know about what things look like. Students will then be asked to build on the outcomes of these exercises by producing a piece of work that examines and/or celebrates the nature of a chosen object, drawing from their own or cultural, collective memories of that object. Lizzie Finn, a London-based designer, has a unique style of illustration using digital technology, machine embroidery and photography. After studying graphic design at Central Saint Martin's in London, she has taken on numerous roles ranging from design to art direction, from illustration to fabric prints for fashion. She has designed pages for Collezione magazine, fabric prints for British fashion designers Silas and Frostfrench and art-directed the animation of a music video for an Oasis single. 1970s craft manuals feature among Lizzie Finn's many idiosyncratic sources of inspiration and informed her influential design for the cover of Moloko's album “Things to Make and Do”. Her work has been featured in several art and design books. Clients include The Beta Band, Hysteric Glamour, Dazed & Confused, British Vogue, Vogue Nippon, LoDown, Loyal and Relax. James Jarvis is an illustrator and cartoonist. Better known in Japan than in Britain, through collaborations with London-based clothing label Silas, for whom he creates graphics, T-shirt images and character toys. His drawings are shot through with witty, knowing playfulness, turning cartoon characters into actors in miniature urban dramas. Jarvis captures reality by depicting his personal obsessions, such as skateboarding and psychedelic rock, while also confounding it, which explains the occasional appearance of a tribe of elves and a lightning-bolt-wielding Supreme Being. His work has appeared in The Face, Nova and his own comic, World of Pain. Ben Sansbury is a freelance graphic designer and art director. His work is permeated by a subtle sense of irony adding an irresistible twist of mockery to his otherwise canonical and sombre style. A characteristic of his modus operandi is to eschew traditional forms of graphic representation, opting instead for the plain introduction of 3D objects often invented, built and photographed specifically for this purpose. He then encourages the viewer to actively join in, deconstructing and reconstructing a different version of the original image. Sansbury has worked on many projects including editing books, working with web design partner Arron Bleasdale under the name of "wedostuff", and he has long-standing relationship with the British clothing company Silas.
