Il 17 giugno 2004 l'autorevole scrittore e critico newyorkese Steven Heller sarà a Fabrica per una conferenza dal titolo "Unacceptable. Designing the 20th Century Avant-Gard magazine". Basata sul suo libro "Merz to Emigre: Avant Garde Magazine Design of the Twentieth Century", la conferenza è un'indagine sul graphic design radicale e fuori dagli schemi presentato, promosso e pubblicato su periodici e pubblicazioni. Usando riviste e giornali come una lente attraverso cui osservare gli stili del design di avanguardia, Heller parlerà del ruolo di rottura avuto da movimenti, scuole e individui rispetto alla tradizione e alle regole del design ufficiale; come e perchè hanno rotto con le convenzioni e come e perchè furono accettati, rifiutati e quindi assimilati alla cultura ufficiale, nella grafica commerciale e nella pubblicità di maniera. Un excursus sul materiale più significiativo del design del ventesimo secolo dalle moderne manifestazioni di inizio secolo - come l'art nouveau - fino ai movimenti radicali degli anni '20 - Futurismo e Dadaismo - alla cultura Beat degli anni '50, e quindi una tumultuosa carrellata attraverso la psicadelia degli anni'60, il movimento punk degli anni '80 fino ad arrivare ad oggi.

Steven Heller è l'art director della New York Times Book Review e il co-presidente del corso MFA/Design della School of Visual Arts. Scrive per le riviste Print, Eye e Baseline. Ha pubblicato più di ottanta libri sul graphic design, sull'arte popolare e sull'arte satirica, tra cui una biografia di Paul Rand, The Swastika: Symbol Beyond Redemption?, Design Literacy, Design Literacy Continued, Graphic Style: From Victorian to Digital, The Graphic Design Timeline, Design Dialogues, Typology, The Graphic Design Reader, Citizen Designer, Merz to Emigre: Avant Garde Magazine Design of the Twentieth Century. Nel corso della sua carriera ha ottenuto il premio Art Director's Hall of Fame Special Educators, il premio Hersehel Levit del Pratt Institute e, nel 1999, l'AIGA Medal alla carriera. Sta scrivendo una biografia di Alvin Lustig.

On June 17th the influential writer and critic Steven Heller will be at Fabrica for a lecture entitled "Unacceptable. Designing the 20th Century Avant-Gard magazine". Based on the book "Merz to Emigre: Avant Garde Magazine Design of the Twentieth Century", this talk is a survey of off-center and radical graphic design as presented, promoted, and manifested in periodicals and publications. Using magazine and journals as lens through which to view avant garde design styles, Heller will focus on the tradition-busting and rule breaking design movements, schools, and individuals; how and why they broke with convention as well as how and why they were accepted, rejected, and assimilated into the mainstream culture as commercial graphic and advertising mannerisms.
The range of included material spans the 1900s from the turn of the century modern manifestations - Art Nouveau - to twenties radical moderns - Futurism and Dada - to fifties Beat culture, and then a tumultuous slide through to sixties Psychedelic cult, eighties Punk right up to the present rave and zine culture.

Steven Heller is the art director of the New York Times Book Review and the co-chair of the MFA/Design program at the School of Visual Arts. He is contributing editor to Print, Eye, and Baseline magazines. He is the author of over eighty books on graphic design, popular art, and satiric art. His books include a biography of Paul Rand, The Swastika: Symbol Beyond Redemption?, Design Literacy, Design Literacy Continued, Graphic Style: From Victorian to Digital, The Graphic Design Timeline, Design Dialogues, Typology, The Graphic Design Reader, Citizen Designer, Merz to Emigre: Avant Garde Magazine Design of the Twentieth Century. Heller is the recipient of the Art Director's Hall of Fame Special Educators Award, Pratt Institute's Hersehel Levit Award, and the 1999 AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement. He is currently writing a biography of Alvin Lustig.
