Edward Carey's novels, which are invariably modern dark fairytales, always include his own artwork. Right from the start he works out his characters by drawing or sculpting them.
For his first novel, "Observatory Mansions", Carey made a set of etchings to illustrate the text, but even before that he made many hundreds of drawings of the various characters to help him in his writing, and collected many of the nearly one thousand objects that form an exhibition of the principal character's thieving which is integral to the novel.
His second novel, "Alva and Irva", is the story of identical twin girls, cut off from the rest of society who begin slowly to make an exact replica of their home city in miniature in plasticine. To illustrate the book Carey made part of the miniature city himself and photographs of various significant buildings can be found throughout the text, he also made sculptures of the twins themselves. This novel is written in part as a guidebook to a city that does not exist and as well as the photographs a map is included in the book and directions of how to get around the city, as well as lists of its better restaurants and attractions.
His third novel, which he is still working on, and which is provisionally titled "Little", is the story of a undersized girl who works for an expert anatomist in Paris during the time of the French Revolution. For this novel Carey will make various heads, body parts and shop dummies, objects as important to the book as the characters themselves, to date he has already finished a life-size portrait of the principal character in wood with glass eyes and human hair, and also a wax death mask and an extremely miserable doll's head. Carey will be talking about how his art affects his writing and vice versa, and how they are both, to him, essential parts of his creative process.

Edward Carey was born in 1970 in England. He Carey has worked as a illustrator, set designer and sculptor. As a playwright he has written several adaptations for the stage, including Patrick Suskind's "The Pigeon" and Robert Coover's "Pinocchio in Venice", and has recently finished a free adaptation of "The Pickwick Papers". His own plays have been produced in London, Romania and Lithuania and he is currently working on a project with the English puppet company Faulty Optic . His books have been published in thirteen countries.

The next meeting will be with the graphic designers Cornel Windlin and Samuel Nyholm who will give a workshop from May 11 to 13 entitled "Subjective & objective points of view".

Conferenza - reading aperta al pubblico: 5 maggio 2005 ore 18:00 Wanted Creativity Workshops e Lectures 2005 I romanzi di Edward Carey sono innegabilmente moderne favole dark e includono sempre le sue illustrazioni e disegni: fin dall'inizio ha messo a punto i suoi personaggi disegnandoli o scolpendoli.
Per il suo primo romanzo"Observatory Mansions", Carey ha realizzato una serie di incisioni per illustrare il testo e, ancora prima di scriverlo, aveva disegnato migliaia di immagini dei personaggi e raccolto molti dei quasi mille oggetti che formano la collezione di oggetti d'amore del personaggio principale.
Il suo secondo romanzo, "Alva e Irva", è la storia di due gemelle, che, isolate dal resto della società, cominciano a fare con la plastilina una replica esatta - in miniatura - della loro città. Per illustrare il libro, Carey ha modellato una parte della miniatura della città e fotografie dei più significativi edifici si trovano all'interno del testo; ha realizzato anche le sculture delle gemelle. Questo romanzo è scritto in parte come una guida a una città che non esiste, e, oltre alle fotografie, è inclusa una mappa stradale e sono indicati i migliori ristoranti e attrazioni. Il suo terzo romanzo - ancora in lavorazione, titolo provvisorio "Little" -è la storia di una ragazza bassa di statura che lavora per un esperto di anatomia a Parigi, durante la Rivoluzione Francese. Per questo romanzo Carey farà varie sculture, oggetti importanti per il libro quanto i personaggi stessi: ha già finito una scultura a grandezza naturale del personaggio principale, con occhi di vetro e capelli umani e una testa di bambola molto infelice. Durante la conferenza l'autore parlerà di come la sua arte influenzi la sua scrittura e viceversa, e di come entrambe per lui siano una parte essenziale del suo processo creativo: racconterà e mostrerà al pubblico le immagini e le sculture dei suoi personaggi attraverso la lettura di alcuni brani tratti dai suoi romanzi.

Edward Carey è nato nel 1970 in Inghilterra. Oltre all'attività di scrittore illustratore e scultore, è anche autore teatrale: ha scritto varie riduzioni per il palcoscenico, fra cui "Il piccione" di Patrick Suskind e "Pinocchio a Venezia" di Robert Coover, e ha recentemente ultimato un libero adattamento di "Il circolo Pickwick". Le sue opere teatrali sono state rappresentate a Londra, in Romania e in Lituania. Attualmente è impegnato in un progetto insieme alla compagnia inglese di marionette Faulty Optic. I suoi libri sono stati pubblicati in tredici paesi.

Il prossimo apputamento con Wanted creativity sarà con i noti graphic designers Cornel Windlin e Samuel Nyholm che verranno a Fabrica dall'11 al 13 maggio per un workshop dal titolo "Subjective & objective points of view".
